North Cyprus IVF Center - Gender (Sex) Selection Program

Because of some family balancing purposes or in order to prevent some sex-related genetic diseases, some couples would like to select the sex of their unborn child. At NorthCyprus IVF Center, we can legally offer the opportunity of gender selection treatment to such couples.
Identification of the right treatment method for gender selection depends on some below mentioned factors;

1) Age of the female patient: Based on the fact that, with age the ovarian reserves tend to diminish while genetic problems become more common, the age of the female partner is very important.

2) Semen analysis results for the male patient: MicroSort is one of a number of gender selection alternatives offered at North Cyprus IVF Center. Simply put, it is a sperm sorting technology that can be used for patients whose sperm concentration is more than 70 million/ml.

3) Hormone levels for the female patient: As they reflect the level of ovarian reserves and the quality of oocytes in the reserves, this piece of information helps us to get a more effective assessment of your needs and requirements to provide best suitable method of treatment.

Based on aforementioned results, we will be able to identify the right mode of treatment that best suits you. If you need any further assistance on tests and interpretation, please visit our "Male and Female Testing" section. Similarly, you may find answers to many questions about our gender selection program in the "Frequently Asked Gender Selection Questions" section.

We offer Gender Selection in 4 alternative methods at North Cyprus IVF Center;

1) MicroSort IUI for Gender Selection
This method is mostly suitable for fertile couples in their 20s because, a well inacted ovarian reserve, as well as a satisfactory sperm count, concentration, motility and morphology is required. This method is performed very similar to regular IUI. The female patient is expected to produce multiple oocytes through a very mild stimulation medication in order to increase the chances of pregnancy at the time of insemination. Subsequently, the MicroSorted sperm is injected intra-uterine. While MicroSort for gender selection with IUI treatment has 75% accuracy for gender selection for a boy, it has a 90% accuracy for gender selection for a girl.

2) MicroSort IVF for Gender Selection
Just like regular IVF-ICSI treatment, in this method the male partner’s sperm is sorted into X and Y bearing cells. The difference is that the female partner’s eggs are taken out and the sperm is injected directly into the nucleus of the egg for fertilization in the lab environment. Even thought the accuracy rates are very similar to the previously mentioned method, pregnancy rates are higher because of the fact that IVF procedures allow for multiple eggs to be fertilized and transferred back into the uterus.

3) IVF with PGD for Gender Selection
Even though it is a bit more expensive, this method not only allows us to identify the gender with 99.9%, but also gives us the chance of screening for most common genetic disorders. It is more suitable for females within the 20-35 age group and works just like regular IVF. The difference is that, a biopsy is performed once the embryos reach the 8-cell growth stage. It allows us to test for certain genetic conditions and determine the sex. Indeed, chromosomes X, Y, 13, 18 and 21, that are considered as the causes of almost 90% of all genetic-linked abnormalities are observed through this biopsy.

4) MicroSort IVF with PGD for Gender Selection
Combination of MicroSort and PGD is the best existing gender selection method offered by our clinic, especially for patients older than 35 years of age. This method combines the advantages of MicroSort and PGD technologies. While MicroSorting makes sure that majority of the sperm is sorted into the cells, PGD provides increased accuracy for gender selection and allows us to screen embryos for majority of genetic diseases.

For any more details on MicroSort, please feel free to visit our  "MicroSort Facts and Guidelines" section.

Requirements and Recommendations for Microsort

http://

MicroSort is available for couples who are looking to balance their families or prevent certain genetic diseases.

What are the requirements for family balancing?
Couples who want to use MicroSort to balance the genders of their children must:
  • Have at least one child
  • Sort for the underrepresented gender in the family
  • Be negative for HIV, and Hepatitis B surface antigen and C antibody
What are the requirements for couples at risk for X-linked disorders?
Couples who want to use MicroSort to reduce the probability of genetic disease transmission must:
  • Be a known carrier of an X-linked or X-limited disorder
  • Be negative for HIV, and Hepatitis B surface antigen and C antibody
MicroSort laboratories are not equipped to process infectious samples; therefore all patients must present negative testing results for the following:
  • HIV I and II
  • Hepatitis B and C*
  • VDRL
The mentioned testing can be performed in any certified lab as long as they were performed no more than six months prior to the date of the procedure.
The MicroSort procedure is a demanding process requiring a high number of motile sperm be provided for sorting so that sufficient viable sperm are sorted for use in assisted reproductive techniques. We strongly recommend you provide the results of a semen analysis performed as close as possible to the date of your procedure. These results will provide the semen characteristics that our staff can use to estimate the expected results and plan for any different measures that can be considered based on your semen analysis.
While semen analysis is not a requirement of MicroSort, if your procedure is canceled due to too few viable sperm, there will be a cancellation fee of 40% of the total cost of the procedure.
For best semen quality results, MicroSort recommends:
  • Abstinence for two or three days.
  • No alcohol consumption during that period.
  • No exposure to high temperatures, such as hot water, hot tubs, vapor rooms, etc.
*Patients that have received hepatitis vaccines should get the appropriate tests to avoid false positives.

Microsort in North Cyprus

Microsort is a pre-conception sperm sorting technology developed by Genetics and IVF Institute of the United States. The technology became available through a clinical study where sperm was sorted into those that primarily produce girls and those that primarily produce boys. Through a series of studies, microsort was found to be 90% effective in gender selection for a girl and about 75% effective for gender selection for a boy. Microsort became available in Mexico first.

North Cyprus IVF clinic is proud to announce that Cyprus is going to be the second location in the world to offer Microsort, the pre-conception sperm sorting technology for gender selection for family balancing purposes. Microsort will be available through artificial insemination (IUI), through IVF and through IVF with PGD.

If the sperm separated through microsort is used in IVF treatment, the probability of having a female or a male child will be around 90% and 75% respectively. If microsort is coupled with PGD (pre-implantation genetic diagnosis) where the embryos formed after microsort are subjected to genetic screening both for gender and for certain genetic diseases. Using the two gender selection methods together both enable obtaining a good number of embryos of desired sex as well as screening for further genetic diseases and making sure almost 100% that the procedure will result in a pregnancy with a baby of desired sex.

As North Cyprus IVF, we continue to bring you the latest technology and highest standards in IVF treatment. Our difference is our success rates!

Infertility and IVF

At North Cyprus IVF Clinic, a thorough investigation is called for when making an assessment of your treatment options. It is important that the cause of infertility is mostly known when planning for treatment.

When natural conception methods fail to produce pregnancy, IVF becomes an option. In vitro fertilization (IVF) is a process by which egg cells are fertilized by sperm outside the womb, in vitro. IVF is a major treatment in infertility when other methods of assisted reproductive technology have failed. The process involves hormonally controlling the ovulatory process, removing ova (eggs) from the woman's ovaries and letting sperm fertilize them in a fluid medium. The fertilized egg (zygote) is then transferred to the patient's uterus with the intent to establish a successful pregnancy. The first "test tube baby", Louise Brown, was born in 1978. Initially IVF was developed to overcome infertility due to problems of the fallopian tube, but it turned out that it was successful in many other infertility situations as well. The introduction of intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) addresses the problem of male infertility to a large extent. (Male infertility consists of failure to produce sperm.)

For IVF to be successful it may be easier to say that it requires healthy ova, sperm that can fertilize, and a uterus that can maintain a pregnancy. At North Cyprus IVF, before starting to plan your treatment, we make sure all of these conditions are met.

IVF can be used for females who have already gone through menopause. The donated oocyte from a healthy young woman can be fertilized in a crucible. If the fertilization is successful, the zygote will be transferred into the uterus, within which it will develop into an embryo.

Treatment cycles are typically started on the third day of menstruation and consist of a regimen of fertility medications to stimulate the development of multiple follicles of the ovaries. In most patients injectable gonadotropins (usually FSH analogues) are used under close monitoring. Such monitoring frequently checks the estradiol level and, by means of gynecologic ultrasonography, follicular growth. Typically approximately 10 days of injections will be necessary. Spontaneous ovulation during the cycle is typically prevented by the use of GnRH agonists or GnRH antagonists, which block the natural surge of luteinizing hormone (LH).

When follicular maturation is judged to be adequate, human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) is given. This agent, which acts as an analogue of luteinizing hormone, would cause ovulation about 42 hours after injection, but a retrieval procedure takes place just prior to that, in order to recover the egg cells from the ovary. The eggs are retrieved from the patient using a transvaginal technique involving an ultrasound-guided needle piercing the vaginal wall to reach the ovaries. Through this needle follicles can be aspirated, and the follicular fluid is handed to the IVF laboratory to identify ova. It is common to remove between ten and thirty eggs. The retrieval procedure takes about 20 minutes and is usually done under conscious sedation or general anesthesia.

In the laboratory, the identified eggs are stripped of surrounding cells and prepared for fertilization. In the meantime, semen is prepared for fertilization by removing inactive cells and seminal fluid. If semen is being provided by a sperm donor, it will usually have been prepared for treatment before being frozen and quarantined, and it will be thawed ready for use. The sperm and the egg are incubated together at a ratio of about 75,000:1 in the culture media for about 18 hours. In most cases, the egg will be fertilized by that time and the fertilized egg will show two pronuclei. In certain situations, such as low sperm count or motility, a single sperm may be injected directly into the egg using intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI). The fertilized egg is passed to a special growth medium and left for about 72 hours until the egg consists of eight cells.

PGD testing for Genetic Disorders

PGD (Pre-implantation Genetic Diagnosis) technology improves the likelihood of a successful pregnancy and birth for two distinctly different groups of patients. Couples with infertility related to recurrent miscarriage or unsuccessful IVF cycles and couples who are at risk for passing on inherited genetic disease to their offspring.

PGD genetic diagnosis is performed as a part of an In Vitro Fertilization cycle where multiple eggs are produced, retrieved from the ovaries and fertilized with the husband's sperm in the Embryology Laboratory. IVF is necessary to give us access to the embryo in vitro. At their earliest stage of development, one or two cells are removed from each embryo through a procedure called embryo biopsy. These cells are analyzed in the PGD Laboratory to determine which embryos are free of genetic abnormalities. This sophisticated and technologically advanced testing identifies which embryos are free of abnormalities and more able to achieve the patient's goal of a healthy baby. PGD can screen for genetic disorders in chromosomes X, Y, 13, 18 and 21, which make up for about 85% of all major genetic conditions such as Down's syndrome, Tay Sachs and klinefelter's syndrome and many more.

PGD tetsing is also an option when patients require screening for a specific genetic disorder. When the gene that carries the genetic disorder is identified, single gene analysis can be performed in order to screen for the specific disorder. A special PGD probe can be built for this purpose as long as the specific cause of the genetic condition has been identified.

PGD genetic testing is also an option when families would like to select the gender of their baby for family balancing purposes. The embryo biopsy will not only allow us to select embryos that are free of genetic abnormalities, but will also allow us to determine the sex of the embryos. Once PGD is performed, the chance of having a baby of desired sex is very close to 100% once pregnancy is achieved. This process is also known as gender selection (sex selection) IVF.

Microsort IUI

IUI (intrauterine insemination) treatment is generally recommended for patients in their 20’s who prefer a non-invasive alternative to IVF.

A mild dose of medication is prescribed for ovulation in order to increase the number of eggs that are produced. The male sperm is then sorted into X and Y with the Microsort procedure and inserted into the uterus once the eggs have matured and are ready for fertiization.

This method is 90% accurate for female and 75% accurate for male offspring.
As the eggs are not retrieved from the female, there is no biopsy or genetic testing performed to ensure 100% accuracy.

The success rates for IUI are about 5-30% depending on the age of the female and multiple tries might be required until pregnancy is achieved.

Where to get your scans?

Since majority of our patients come from abroad, and given that in our hectic lives, we all have work/family or other commitments, not everyone is able to travel for treatment for a long period of time. In order to shorten the length of your stay without compromising your chances of success, our protocols are prepared so that you can have access to your medication and follow a certain treatment calendar prior to your arrival in Cyprus. This minimizes your stay down to 8 days. However, in the meanwhile, while you are using your medication, you will need to have a couple of scans in order to observe how you are responding to the medication and whether we need any dose adjustments or additional supplements. For this end, you can either see your own gynecologist for the scans if they are willing to cooperate, or use one of the locations we recommend.

1- For UK patients, Baby Bond is a great place for the scans. The scans are reasonably priced and you are able to get last minute appointments. The best thing about baby bond is, they have locations all over the UK, please visit http://www.babybond.com for more specific information about location and appointments.

2- For US patients, we have a number of locations that we can recommend. However, since the US has a very large geaography, our locations may need air travel, which may not be convenient to all patients. Please ask Ahmet directly about the US locations.

3- For Turkey patients, there is a location almost in every city where we can recommend for your scans, please ask Ahmet about these locations.

4- For patients from the Netherlands, we have a local representative who will be in charge of all the preliminary work, Mr. Bert Van Delen. We will get you in touch with him once you are admitted into our treatment program.

5- For other locations, please ask us if we have any recommendations. We have options for patients from Germany, Switzerland, Italy and France, but only in the capitals.

Repeated IVF Failures

IVF failures are one of the most depressing experiences a couple can go through in their IVF journey. Having experienced several failed attempts can be very depressing and frustrating, especially when there is no explanation provided for them. At North Cyprus IVF, we make sure our patients are thoroughly analyzed before attempting another IVF cycle so that some known possibilities can be ruled out. Once a couple go through the standard testing procedures and these tests are inconclusive of the factors of infertility, then additional factors need to be taken into consideration. Some of the possibilities which need to be taken into consideration are as follows:

Uterine infection
The inside of the uterine cavity is normally considered to be a sterile environment. It has been strongly suspected that infection of the uterine cavity with bacteria may cause an inhospitable environment that would lead to failure of embryos to implant. In cases where there is a reason to suspect a uterine infection, an endometrial biopsy procedure may be called for in order to make an effective assessment. Normally, infections can be treated with antibiotic use. There are also other infectious diseases that can be considered during this investigation such as CMV IgG, Chlamydia and more.

Immune factors as a cause for IVF implantation failure
The immune system is designed to protect individuals from infection with microorganisms and to fight off abnormal processes in the body like cancer. In the areas of IVF, infertility and recurrent pregnancy loss, there has been an extensive amount of investigation as to the role of immune factors in the implantation process of the embryos. In some cases, the immune system is believed to see the embryo as a foreign object and reject its implantation.

Thrombophilias
Thrombophilias are conditions that result in an increased chance for blood clotting. There have been many studies showing an association between the presence of thrombophilias in women and the risk for miscarriage. Some studies also indicate that thrombophilias can also be associated with implantation failures. Certain genetic tests help identify the existence of thrombophilias in the female partner.

PGD works very much like conventional IVF. The only difference is; embryos that are formed in the laboratory are subjected to a biopsy and a series of genetic tests before transferred into the uterus. Patients undergoing IVF + PGD treatment are required to provide the same information as requested in conventional IVF. (See the "Required Tests" section for required tests).

Also see our "Gender Selection" section for performing PGD for selection of the sex of the baby for family balancing reasons.

Steps in IVF Treatment - North Cyprus IVF Clinic

Step 1: Making the call.
This is perhaps the most difficult stage of your treatment. Making the right decision necessitates having the right information. This website aims to provide you with the right information so that you can make an informed decision about handling your fertility treatment.

Step 2: Initial Consultation and Screening Tests.
Once you make the decision to proceed, we guide you through the initial screening process, which involves a series of testing and diagnosis in order to choose the right treatment option.

Step 3: Medication Stage
Before you make a trip down to our clinic in Cyprus, we give you a detailed chart of treatment protocol in which we specify what needs to be done on a daily basis and which medication to take. This ensures that you are biologically ready for your embryo transfer stage.

Step 4: Coming to Cyprus
At this point, you have gone through your medication stage and prepared for the rest of your treatment. In regular IVF and sperm donation IVF cases, this is when your eggs are fully developed and ready for retrieval. In egg donation IVF cases, this is when donor's eggs are ready for retrieval.

Step 5: Egg Retrieval
Once the eggs are fully developed, they are ready for retrieval. You (or the donor) will be sedated for this process. A scan probe is passed through the vagina and into the ovary under ultrasound guidance; the fluid from each follicle, which contains the egg, is extracted. It is usual to obtain an egg from about 80% of follicles.

Step 6: Fertilization
The retrieved eggs are fertilized with the sperm to be obtained from the male patient (or the sperm donor). After about 48 - 72 hours from egg collection, the embryos will usually consist of four to eight cells each, and are now ready for placement into the woman’s uterus.

Step 7: Embryo Transfer
Using a vaginal speculum, the cervix is exposed, which is then cleaned. The culture medium containing the embryos is loaded in a catheter with a syringe on one end. The doctor carefully guides the catheter through the vagina and cervix, and deposits the embryos into the uterus. Implantation begins three - four days later.

Step 8: Pregnancy
After about 12 days of the embryo transfer, we request that you get a blood test done for beta hCG, which is the pregnancy hormone which elevates during pregnancy. A beta hCG under 5 mIU/ml indicates that you are not pregnant. A level between 5 - 25 mIU/ml indicates possible pregnancy, which we advise to test again in a couple of days. A level higher than 25 mIU/ml indicates pregnancy.

Step 9: Follow Up
Once you get the good news, you simply dial the phone and let us know. Share the joy :)

Patient Testimonial

I went to North Cyprus IVF in August after a failed first attempt at Dogus in May. Overall, I have been happy with the care I received at North Cyprus IVF.  Right from the start, Deedee had been very professional and compassionate, and she answered all my queries promptly and knowledgeably. As a medical doctor myself, I would say that I am pleased with the expertise of Dr Savas Ozyigit and Dr Idil Aslan. I felt that I had a higher level of care here and both doctors treated me with respect. Medically, I believe I had better treatment here - the embryology lab was in-house, Dr Savas whilst checking me for the first time tested out which catheter would best suit me, and we also discussed blood test (for my progesterone level). It has been shown that the expertise and experience of the person doing the embryo transfer plays a role in IVF success, and having done my research, I have a lot of faith in Dr Savas.

I did not get the result I wanted, and am planning to go back in December to North Cyrpus IVF (I will use MicroSort next time). And Golden Tulip Hotel that I was housed in made it a nice holiday for my partner and I.

Frequently Asked Question

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do I need to get hormone tests done if I already have children?

The hormone tests are requested in order for the Dr. to better understand the quality and quantity of eggs and provide a personalized and detailed treatment for each individual patient.

Why do I need to have an ultrasound before I begin treatment?

The ultrasound is requested in order to make sure there are no ovarian cysts, polyps or anything else that might stand in the way of a successful IVF cycle.

What is the  HCG trigger injection for?

This shot is for women who are using their own eggs and it helps release the  mature eggs from the follicles and is usually done 35 hours before egg collection. It is the final step in assisting the maturation process and ensure the eggs are released from the follicles.

This is generally done in Cyprus but can be done before traveling in order to shortent the stay.

When do I start using the Cetrotide?

Cetrotide is generally used to block any premature LH surge in women and is generally started when the dominant follicle reaches 14mm.

What does Estradiol Valerate do?

It is a female estrogen hormone and is used for patients undergoing Egg Donation and is used to thicken and prepare the womb before the embryo transfer.

What does Gonal F do?

This is a follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) to help increase the number of growing follicles and their development.
The dosage will be prescribed based on the inital hormone test results and varies from individual to individual.

What does Menopur do?

Menopur is also used for follicle growth and development and contains follicle stimulating hormone as well as luteinising hormone (LH).

Can I travel with the injections?

The injections will need to be checked in your luggage but there should be no problems traveling with them.

Why do I need to have scans?

The scans for Egg Donation patients are requested in order to make sure that the lining of the womb is ready for the embryo transfer.

The scans for women using their own eggs (IVF with ICSI and Gender Seletion/PGD) is to ensure the follicles are developping well before egg collection.

It is important to let us know the results of the scans so that we can adjust your treatment schedule and medication in take if necessary.

What tests can I do if I have recurrig miscarriages?

Here are a list of tests that can be done:

MTHFR C677T
MTHFR A1298C
Factor V Leiden
Factor II
PAI 1

How are the injections done?

The Gonal F injections should be done subcutaneously either in the abdomen/stomach area, naval area or upper thigh where there is excess skin and fatty tissues. It is recommended to vary the injection site.

Please watch the videos below for preparing and administering the medication.

The eggs are generally collected on day 15 of the cycle after an ultrasound and the trigger injection.

When is the embryo transfered?

With regular IVF the embryos are generally transfered on day 18 and with PGD on day 20.
This of course might vary from patient to patient.
We can transfer up to 3 embryos at our clinic.

What chromosomes are examined with PGD?

During the PGD biopsy we test chromosomes X, Y, 13, 18 and 21 which are causes of close to 90% of abnormalities.

What happens if we have left over embryos?

Many patients will choose to freeze the embryos in case they need it in the future, other patient will ask for the remaining embryos to be destroyed or used for donation.

When do I do the pregnancy test?

The pregnancy blood test is suggested 12 days after the embryo transfer.

What happens after a postive pregnancy result?

After a postitive result you will continue to take medication for 11 weeks after the embryo transfer. Normally this will be Crinone Gel (Progesterone) and Aspirin.

Do we have to use the accommodation offered in your packages?

Some patients decide they would prefer to select their own accommodation which is no problem for us.
If you would like to still take advantage of the free ground transfers however, it is preferable that your hotel be in Nicosia (Lefkosa) North Cyprus.
