Sickle Cell Disease

Sickle cell anemia is caused by an abnormal type hemoglobin called hemoglobin S and is a case where the red blood cells are sickle shaped.

The job of these hemoglobin molecules is to bind and carry oxygen to the tissues but in the presence of abnormal hemoglobin molecules, this delivery is less optimal and can cause problems.

HBB gene mutation is the cause for sickle cell disorder however with our PGD (Pre-Implantation Genetic Diagnosis) treatment you can prevent passing this gene onto your children.

If you are at risk for passing sickle cell please visit the link below for further information about our PGD IVF treatment for genetic disorders.

How soon after the embryo transfer will I know whether I am pregnant or not?

A beta hCG test will be administered 12 days after your embryo transfer to detect hCG hormone in blood. This is a specific hormone released immediately after pregnancy occurs. This is the soonest that pregnancy can be detected. We do not recommend using a home pregnancy test as they are not very accurate too early into your pregnancy and they may not be able to detect anything until 15/16 days after your embryo transfer. Therefore, a home pregnancy test done too early is likely to indicate a negative result as it is unable to detect pregnancy and will cause disappointment. Please schedule you beta hCG test 12 days after your embryo transfer at your local doctor for most accurate results.

How long will I need to be in Cyprus for?

We try to minimize then length of stay for our traveling patients as we realize how difficult it can be to take time off work, family or other commitments. This is precisely why we have established links with reputable clinics abroad for preliminary testing and monitoring so that you are not required to come to Cyprus for the entire treatment. Given that you are able to carry out the preliminary work locally, you will only need to visit us for a total of eight (8) days. This will be the amount of time required for your final scan, trigger injection, egg retrieval, ICSI for fertilization, embryo biopsy and genetic screening and the final embryo transfer.

What is the age limit for gender selection treatment?

There is no specific age limit for the gender selection treatment, but there is an age limit for IVF treatment. This is in relation to how likely you are to achieve success. If not using a donor, then we will want to make sure your eggs are viable and we have a shot at pregnancy with your own eggs. This is one of the reasons why we ask that patients undergo a series of testing for assessment of their fertility levels prior to proceeding with treatment. Based on these test results, we are able to form an opinion of how likely we are to obtain a good count and quality of eggs in an IVF cycle and how likely these eggs are to produce a healthy pregnancy. We try to emphasize that over the age of 35, the level of fertility tends to decline for female patients and that affects the chances of success with treatment. Over the age of 40, pregnancy rates drop dramatically and unless the patients have a satisfactory level of hormone profile that provides them with some chance of success, we recommend against treatment with own eggs.

What are my chances of success with gender selection treatment?

The chances of success will depend on a number of factors. These include your age, your hormone levels and general level of fertility as well as your husband's semen characteristics and other factors like the equipment used, doctors' experience and choice of medication. So it is really misleading to quote a success statistics in general or based on just your age. However, the age based statistics we publish on our website more or less provides an idea of what you will be looking at. However, your individual hormone profile and your ovarian reserves are the most important determinant of how likely you are to achieve success. Patients up till mid-30s usually have a very good chance of getting pregnant on the first attempt as long as they have an ovarian reserve and a hormone profile in line with their age. Above the age of 35, the level of fertility declines and the chances of success start to diminish.

In some cases, when we are able to obtain a good count and quality of eggs, we end up having multiple embryos of desired sex and if there are more embryos than required for the given transfer cycle, we are able to preserve the ones that will not be used in the current cycle. This gives you a chance to use these preserved embryos at a future date without having to go through the entire treatment again.

Gender Selection Options

We do have alternative gender selection treatment options at our clinic, but when it comes to gender selection, a few factors are very important when determining which type of treatment will be more suited to your needs. These are mainly  the age of the female patienthormone levels to be measured at a certain time during a menstrual cycle, and the husband's semen analysis results.

The hormone profile of the female patient is most important when making an assessment of the ovarian reserve and the remaining egg quality. As age gets older, the ovarian reserves also tend to diminish at a faster pace and this affects the quality of the oocytes accordingly. Therefore, if we know exactly what type of a reserve we are looking at, we can optimize the outcome of a treatment cycle by carefully calculating the dose of medication to be administered.

There are three different types of gender selection methods offered at our clinic:

1- MicroSort IUI – Least invasive of all gender selection treatments. This is mostly offered to couples in their 20s. The male partner’s semen sample is sorted into X and Y bearing cells and the appropriate batch is injected intra-uterine for pregnancy with the child of desired sex. However, there are a few points that you should know about this procedure:
- The sort mechanism only works when the sperm concentration is more than 70 million/ml in the ejaculate. Otherwise, results are less accurate.
- MicroSort provides 90% accurate results for a girl and 80% for a boy. Therefore, it is not a 100% accurate method of gender selection.
- MicroSort is used alongside with IUI, which is the least invasive method of assisted reproduction. Success chances with IUI treatment are always much lower compared to IVF treatments.

2- IVF with PGD: Alternatively, there is a PGD option (Pre-implantation genetic diagnosis) which is a genetic testing procedure done once the embryos are created. It allows us to identify the gender with 99.9% accuracy as well as screening for most common genetic disorders, making sure your baby does not possess a serious genetic condition. If the female patient is younger than 35 years of age and has a hormone profile in line with her age, then this method is usually the ideal method for gender selection.

3. MicroSort IVF with PGD: One other alternative is to combine the two methods. Combination of the two methods is usually recommended for patients older than 35 years of age with diminished ovarian reserves. If the husband's sperm concentration is within acceptable standards, then MicroSorting the sperm makes sure that most of the eggs will be fertilized into embryos of desired sex. Further PGD testing will provide a 99.9% accuracy and will also make sure that the embryos that will be transferred are free of major genetic disorders. If the female patient has only a few eggs to work with, this method will make sure we will be able to find an embryo or two that is of desired sex with the prior MicroSort intervention.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it legal to choose baby's sex?
Yes, as North Cyprus IVF clinic, we are able to offer gender selection IVF in line with the North Cyrus legal system. Even though gender selection is not allowed in most parts of Europe, having gender selection IVF treatment in North Cyprus is completely legal.

Is gender selection possible without IVF?
Yes, At North Cyprus IVF we are able to offer microsort with IUI (artificial insemination). Microsorting technologies allow for gender selection through IUI treatment. However, microsort is only about 75% accurate for a male child and about 90% accurate for a female child, therefore, combining microsort with PGD always results in a more accurate gender selection method.

Is there a 100% guarantee for success with gender selection IVF?
Even though there is no such thing as 100% in real-life sciences, we quote a 99% chance for accurate sex selection through PGD.

Can I use PGD for genetic screening?
Absolutely! PGD is not only for gender selection. With PGD testing, we can also screen for major genetic disorders associated with chromosomes X, Y, 13, 18 and 21 which are the causes of about 85% of all major genetic disorders.

Can I select the sex of my first child?
Even though at North Cyprus IVF, we recommend that gender selection is only performed for family balancing for second or third child, selecting the sex of your first child is also possible if you believe this is an appropriate family balancing act.

Do I still use medication for gender selection IVF even if I have no fertility problems?
Even if you have no fertility issues and you are able to conceive naturally, we will still need to put you on stimulation medication on order to obtain multiple eggs in the ovaries. This will allow us to fertilize multiple eggs, and perform the necessary genetic testing on them to identify the healthy embryos that are of appropriate sex for the embryo transfer.

What happens to the embryos that are unused?
You have the choice of freezing any unused embryos for future use. If you wish not to freeze them, the embryos are disposed.
