Vitamins and IVF

Vitamins are an essential part of your treatment. It has been shown that folic acid supplements not only help you maintain a healthy pregnanyc, but also help with your baby’s neural development, therefore, it is important to start using folic acid prior to embryo transfer and continue using for the duration of your pregnancy.

Similarly, use of Vitamin C tablets (precisely, 500 mg) has been identified with increased quality of eggs retrieved, therefore, it will be important to use vitamin C supplements daily for at least 2-3 weeks prior to egg retrieval.

Finally, because your daily food intake may not provide you with all the essential nutrients, it will be important to use a prenatal vitamin complex prior to and throughout your pregnancy. Pregnacare or any other one-a-day prenatal vitamin complex will be useful.

Egg Donation (Donor Egg IVF) Questions

1- Who is a good candidate for egg (oocyte) donor IVF?
Women with severely depleted ovarian reserves, women with highly elevated FSH, women in early menopause or with removed ovaries and women who have been subjected to cancer treatment are all candidates for egg donor IVF. In general, egg donation is for women who are not able to produce any eggs that are viable for fertilization.
 

2- Who are your egg donors?
At North Cyprus IVF, our egg donors are predominantly composed of international university students aged between 20-25.
 

3- How are egg donors screened?
Our egg donors undergo a very strict screening process. First, there is a psychological consultation where egg donors' mental status are assessed. If an egg donor is found mentally fit, then there is a background check of family medical history. Once the medical history is assessed, then comes infectious diseases testing, CBC analysis and hormone testing for an assessment of ovarian reserves and egg quality. Only donors who are non-smokers and with healthy BMIs are admitted into our program.
 

4- Do I get to pick my own donor?
Absolutely! You will need to provide us with your menstrual period information, you and your husband's blood types and your physical features so that we can narrow list our potential donors and send you a list of profiles. However, for anonymity purposes, we are not able to share pictures or any contact information.
 

5- What are your success rates for egg donor IVF?

6- How many egg donation cycles do you perform in a given year?
On average, we perform about 350-400 egg donor IVF cycles.

Female Infertility Problem

A couple is considered to be infertile if:
- If the couple has not been able to achieve pregnancy after trying for a year without the use of any contraceptives if the female partner is 35 years old or younger
- If the couple has not been able to conceive after trying for six months without the use of any contraception if the female partner is above the age of 35. The difference between the two categories of women rests in the fact that ovarian reserves and egg quality tend to diminish rapidly after the age of 35.
-the female is incapable of carrying a pregnancy to full term even if pregnancy is achieved initially.

What are the causes of infertility in women? 
Ovulation problems make up for most cases of infertility in women. When there is no ovulation, then there are no eggs that can be fertilized. Some signs that a woman is not ovulating normally include irregular or absent menstrual periods.

Less common causes of fertility problems in women include:
- blocked fallopian tubes due to pelvic inflammatory disease, endometriosis, or surgery for a previous ectopic pregnancy
- physical problems with the uterus, cervical weakness and adhesion in the uterus.
- uterine fibroids, polyps and free fluids.

 

Which factors increase a woman's risk of infertility?
Many things can affect a woman's ability to have a baby. These include:
- age. With age, ovarian reserves and egg quality tend to diminish highly.
- Stress factors
- poor diet that results in inadequate receipt of the essential nutrients
- athletic training
- being overweight or underweight
- excessive tobacco consumption
- excessive alcohol consumption
- sexually transmitted and infectious diseases
- any factor that contributes to hormonal imbalances.

How does age affect a woman's ability to have children?
More and more women are waiting until their 30s and 40s to have children. Actually, about 20 percent of women in the United States now have their first child after age 35. So age is an increasingly common cause of fertility problems. About one third of couples in which the woman is over 35 have fertility problems. Aging decreases a woman's chances of having a baby in the following ways:
- The ability of a woman's ovaries to release eggs ready for fertilization declines with age.
- The health of a woman's eggs declines with age.
- As a woman ages she is more likely to have health problems that can interfere with fertility.
- As a women ages, her risk of having a miscarriage increases. 

How long should women try to get pregnant before calling their doctors?
Most healthy women under the age of 30 shouldn't worry about infertility unless they've been trying to get pregnant for at least a year. At this point, women should talk to their doctors about a fertility evaluation. Men should also talk to their doctors if this much time has passed.

In some cases, women should talk to their doctors sooner. Women in their 30s who've been trying to get pregnant for six months should speak to their doctors as soon as possible. A woman's chances of having a baby decrease rapidly every year after the age of 30. So getting a complete and timely fertility evaluation is especially important.

Some health issues also increase the risk of fertility problems. So women with the following issues should speak to their doctors as soon as possible:

- irregular periods or no menstrual periods
- very painful periods
- endometriosis
- pelvic inflammatory disease
- more than one miscarriage

No matter how old you are, it's always a good idea to talk to a doctor before you start trying to get pregnant. Doctors can help you prepare your body for a healthy baby. They can also answer questions on fertility and give tips on conceiving.

Our Egg Donation Program

Who are our donors?

Our donors are predominantly between the ages of 19-24, who are international students studying at Cyprus universities. As we have a large donor base, donor matching is a relatively fast process, hence the waiting times are not long. For donor matching, we need information like your blood types, your physical features, and possibly a picture so that we can provide you with a list of profiles who are best matches.

You will be provided information like, age, physical features, educational background, hobbies and interests as well as previous donation information. All of our donors undergo a very strict screening process where we do not only screen for infectious diseases, but also run a family medical background as well as HPV genotyping (which is only available at our clinic in the entire Northern Cyprus)

Where to begin?

The first step in treatment is to see your local gynecologist for an ultrasound scan (sonogram). This is to make sure that the female partner has no major fibroids, polyps in the uterus, or cysts in the ovaries, or nothing in general that can potentially interfere with a successful pregnancy.      

The initial treatment is carried out very easily with a chart of treatment we will provide you based on your credentials. This chart of treatment will contain daily medication use, as well as a schedule for your doctor appointments. It will all be made clear once we know what type of a protocol to follow. Once we are able to provide you with a chart, then we can carry out the preliminary work through email and phone communication both with you and your gynecologist. Once the preliminary work is done, you will need to come to Cyprus for about 6 days. You will be expected to arrive in Cyprus around the 14^th day of menstrual period.

We will need infectious disease test results before we can perform the embryo transfer here. You can either have them done over there or here once you arrive at our clinic. This is just to make sure we do not pass any infectious diseases onto the newborn.

Obtaining Medication and the Initial Treatment

We will be able to send you a scanned copy of your prescription once we see some test results and identify the right mode of treatment. You can use this prescription at the international pharmacy that we work with. The pharmacy is able to deliver worldwide, and does have reasonable prices.

With the medication you purchase, you will be able to have your preliminary work locally under our supervision and with guidance of your local gynecologist. By the end of this process, you will be required to travel to Cyprus for 6 days.

Traveling to Cyprus                    

Our clinic is located in Nicosia, North Cyprus. The nearest airport to our clinic is the Ercan Airport. All flights into Ercan Airport do go through one of the cities in Turkey, so there are no direct flights. The most straightforward route into Ercan would be to fly through Istanbul.

Another alternative is Larnaca Airport in the South. It is located approximately 60 km South of our clinic, and takes about one hour to travel. Sometimes, flights into Larnaca can be much cheaper depending on the season, so checking out both airports will make sense before booking your flights.

Transportation from both airports is complimentary.

Accommodation

We offer three alternatives:

1- Egg Donor IVF Treatment + Accommodation at the Clinic’s guest house. The guest house is a newly finished luxurious 4-bedroom villa. Each bedroom is has its own TV, own minibar and own heating/cooling system. Two of the bedrooms have their own bathrooms, while the other two bedrooms have a shared bathroom. It includes free airport transfers from the Ercan and Larnaca Airports and all ground transfers back and forth. All of your consults and sonograms are offered free of charge for the duration of your stay in Cyprus.

2- Egg Donor IVF Treatment + Accommodation at the 3-star City Royal Hotel in Nicosia (http://www.city-royal.com). This package includes your treatment fees, airport pick-ups from either Ercan or Larnaca Airports, ground transfers between the clinic and the hotel, 6-day hotel accommodation at the City Royal, including open buffet breakfast. Again, all of your consults and sonograms are offered free of charge for the duration of your stay in Cyprus. 

3- Egg Donor IVF Treatment + Accommodation at the 5-star Luxurious Golden Tulip Hotel in Nicosia (http://www.goldentulipnicosia.com). IVF Failures

IVF failures are one of the most depressing experiences a couple can go through in their IVF journey. Having experienced several failed attempts can be very depressing and frustrating, especially when there is no explanation provided for them. At North Cyprus IVF, we make sure our patients are thoroughly analyzed before attempting another IVF cycle so that sone known possibilities can be ruled out. Some of the possibilities which need to be taken into consideration are as follows:

Uterine infection

The inside of the uterine cavity is normally considered to be a sterile environment. It has been strongly suspected that infection of the uterine cavity with bacteria may cause an inhospitable environment that would lead to failure of embryos to implant. In cases where there is a reason to suspect a uterine infection, an endometrial biopsy procedure may be called for in order to make an effective assessment. Normally, infections can be treated with antibiotic use. There are also other infectious diseases that can be considered during this investigation such as CMV IgG, Chlamydia and more.

Immune factors as a cause for IVF implantation failure

The immune system is designed to protect individuals from infection with microorganisms and to fight off abnormal processes in the body like cancer.  In the areas of IVF, infertility and recurrent pregnancy loss, there has been an extensive amount of investigation as to the role of immune factors in the implantation process of the embryos. In some cases, the immune system is believed to see the embryo as a foreign object and reject its implantation.

Thrombophilias

Thrombophilias are conditions that result in an increased chance for blood clotting. There have been many studies showing an association between the presence of thrombophilias in women and the risk for miscarriage. Some studies also indicate that thrombophilias can also be associated with implantation failures. Certain genetic tests help identify the existence of thrombophilias in the female partner.

The Truth About our Egg Donors

Over the last few months it has come to our attention that there has been some controversy over our egg donor lists and available donors.

First and foremost, it is important to note that if there are women who are planning to cycle around the same time and their physical characteristics are similar, they will be offered the same list of donors. Depending on the recipient that chooses first, the donor is then assigned to that individual and the women who have been offered the same donors are notified.

It is very difficult for our team to provide donors 2-3 months in advance for the fact that at any given point in time, a donor can decide to stop with the treatment and  egg donation. If this happens then the recipient is left hanging and the cycle needs to be abandoned.

Our preferred way to deal with our egg donation patients and their donors is to coordinate and synchronize them shortly before the recipient menstrual cycle starts.

We also ask that you send a photo of yourself along with the application form so we can do our best to find the best match for you.

We are aware that this may seem  last minute however it is the best and most accurate way to get the closest donor match.

There are times when frozen eggs are used however the patient is fully aware and accepting of this. We do not do shared cycles unless it is discussed and agreed in advance.

As there are many accredited Universities in Northern Cyprus, there are many young women who are enrolling to donate, donating and cycling on a regular basis.
