Many women do not realize the importance of
egg quality when dealing with infertility. It is a factor that can effect the
results and outcome of the IVF process.
The finite reserve of eggs in a woman are
released during ovulation and can be fertilized to produce a child.
Unfortunately, having a large number of eggs does not mean that you will fall pregnant. The quality of those eggs
are more important in the eventual development of an embryo.
In order for an embryo to develop, the eggs need to have the correct
chromosomes and the ability to fertilize with the sperm. If the eggs do not have the proper
chromosomes, it is not possible to achieve a successful pregnancy.
The female eggs contain mitochondria which is
the energy in the eggs that allow it to split for fertilization. With age, the
mitochondria produce less energy and stop the egg from dividing.
Apart from age, factors such as smoking,
radiation therapy, chemotherapy and endometriosis can also have an effect on
egg quality.
FSH testing is generally used to measure the
quality of the eggs and a high level might indicate poor egg quality.
